East Lyme, CT - Class of 2022 Major: Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering
Ryan Taylor

Hello all! My name is Ryan Taylor and on July 2, 2018 I arrived at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy with the Class of 2022. I grew up locally, about 10 minutes west of the Academy in East Lyme, Connecticut. My close-knit family of five includes myself, my younger sister Sophie, my parents, and our dog Jojo. As a family we love to travel and spend time outdoors, hiking, boating and fishing. At the Academy, I hope to be a member of the track and field team and am also a part of the Cadets Against Sexual Assault (CASA) club.

When I think of an education at the Coast Guard Academy, the word I see as most prominent is “opportunities.” Even in your first months at the Academy, you are afforded opportunities that are unparalleled at any other college. Living locally, my family has taken in sponsor cadets every year for the past 17 years. The Sponsor Cadet Program pairs cadets whose homes are far away with local families who volunteer to sponsor them, give them a place to relax on the weekends, and provide home-cooked meals. I have grown close with many of our sponsor cadets over their four years here, and we still keep in contact with a handful of them 10-or-more years later. Whether they are now flying helicopters in Sitka, Alaska, or stationed in Houston, Texas, sponsor cadets gave me a window into life at the Academy and as a Coast Guard Officer, which made the Academy and the Coast Guard my dream.

As a cadet blogger I will do my best to give you an accurate depiction of the ins-and-outs of each day at the Coast Guard Academy. While I have only been here a short time, I have learned to love every bit of what the Academy has to offer. If you have any questions, comments, or need someone to talk to about life as a cadet, please do not hesitate to email me at [email protected]. Have a great day and Go Bears!
