The U.S. Coast Guard Academy’s Ethics Case Study Team placed second this past weekend
at the 5th Annual Stockdale Center Ethics Case Study Competition hosted at the U.
S. Naval Academy. The Case Study Competition challenges cadet and midshipmen teams
to analyze complex moral and legal scenarios and provide recommended courses of
action. This year’s competition focused on the North Korean Cyber Threat. 1/c Panashe
Mutombo, 2/c Jackie Dilley, 2/c Ethan Goldcamp, and 2/c Leah Harter based their
recommendations on a thorough analysis of Just War Theory, Foreign Relations Modelling,
the International Laws of Armed Conflict, Customary Law and precedent relating to
previous cyber action. As a team, the members leveraged their individual strengths
in International Relations, Public Policy and Law, and Security Studies to provide
a comprehensive assessment of the threat and possible solutions.
