Nathan Barnes, M.S.E., Lieutenant Commander, USCG

cga badge LCDR Nate Barnes is a 2011 graduate of the Coast Guard Academy’s Mechanical Engineering program. Following graduation, he served as the Damage Control Assistant as well as the Auxiliary and Electrical Division Officer onboard the USCGC TAHOMA. In 2013 he was assigned to Sector New York’s Inspection Division. He inspected commercial vessels, ranging from chemical tank ships to barges, for safety and security. In 2015, he attended post graduate school at the University of Michigan, where he earned Masters degrees in Mechanical Engineering and in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. Following graduate school, LCDR Barnes assumed the responsibilities of Engineer Officer onboard the USCGC ACTIVE, where he managed the operation and maintenance of all propulsion and auxiliary systems, availability planning and execution, and the Engineering Department personnel. He joined the Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering faculty in July 2020. LCDR Barnes is happily married to his wife and they have two children. He enjoys mountain biking, hiking, and outdoor activities.
