Marine and Environmental Sciences Educational Objectives

Within seven years after graduation, graduates of the Marine and Environmental Sciences program:

  1. Perform effectively in a variety of career paths as Junior Officers in the Coast Guard.
  2. Use science and technical foundations coupled with continued professional growth to support all of the Coast Guard missions

  3. Demonstrate a commitment to intellectual and professional growth through activities and accomplishments such as graduate study, professional licensure, professional society activity, and/or continuing education.

Student Outcomes

The Student Outcomes support the Program Educational Outcomes.

Graduates will be able to:

  1. Identify, formulate, and solve broadly defined technical or scientific problems by applying knowledge of mathematics and science and/or technical topics to areas relevant to the discipline.
  2. Formulate or design a system, process, procedure or program to meet desired needs.
  3. Develop and conduct experiments or test hypotheses, analyze and interpret data and use scientific judgment to draw conclusions.
  4. Communicate effectively with a range of audiences.
  5. Understand ethical and professional responsibilities and the impact of technical and/or scientific solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts.
  6. Function effectively on teams that establish goals, plan tasks, meet deadlines, and analyze risk and uncertainty.

In addition to the Student Outcomes and Program Educational Objectives, the Marine and Environmental Sciences major produces graduates who:

    1. Apply knowledge of chemistry, physics, biology, earth sciences, calculus, and statistics to evaluate human impacts on the environment.
    2. Understand the basic principles of sustainability, environmental ethics, economics, and the application of environmental science in policy formulation and environmental resources management.
