I was always interested in the military because many of my family members served, both enlisted and officers. What drew me to the Coast Guard was the humanitarian and domestic law enforcement missions. On top of the adventurous career post-graduation, the exciting summer opportunities here as a cadet helped to solidify my decision to apply.

I switched to Electrical Engineering at the end of my first year at the Academy. Electrical Engineering offered a great blend of math, science, and computer programming - a fulfilling challenge. My favorite aspect of studying Electrical Engineering is starting to understand the underlying workings of many of the things I use in my everyday life. I started with little to no background knowledge of Electrical Engineering and now I know a little bit about what is going on behind the scenes when information is sent across the Internet or what is happening in a sound system.

Gaining this knowledge has not been without its challenges. Many of the concepts are very abstract and I’ve found the best way I learn and understand them is to keep working with them, asking questions, and waiting because eventually the light bulb goes off and I get what I wasn’t understanding.

You can expect the Academy to be challenging and you have to be ready to fail, but also be prepared to accomplish some awesome things. If this is what you want, stick with it, don’t be afraid to ask for help, and you will succeed.
