IFL Predoctoral Fellows Program

As the United States Coast Guard Academy’s center for leadership development, the Loy Institute creates and delivers innovative strategies and programs that develop and assess the leadership competencies of Cadets during their four-year experience at the Academy, as well as in their Coast Guard and professional careers and for the rest of their lives.

The Loy Institute Faculty Fellows Program is a new initiative where faculty members and professional researchers outside of the Coast Guard Academy can partner with CGA faculty and the Loy Institute to conduct leadership development and related research. Loy Institute Faculty Fellows will be granted access (upon IRB approval) to rich CGA Institutional Research datasets of Cadet demographics, experiences, perceptions, and student performance, as well post-graduation information about job performance, promotions, awards, and supervisory ratings. The goal is for these Fellows to work on research project teams alongside CGA faculty to analyze and publish research that is both beneficial to the career of the Fellow, and provides insights to the Loy Institute and CGA about student leadership development and the Cadet experience.

Eligibility

Applicants to the Loy Institute Faculty Fellows Program must:

  • Be enrolled in an eligible research-based (dissertation-required) program leading to a Ph.D. or Sc.D. degree at a U.S. institution of higher education, to be completed within 3 years of this application.
  • Have a demonstrated evidence of superior academic achievement (such as grade point average, class rank, honors, or other designations)
  • Be willing and able to use Loy Institute and CGA Institutional Research data to conduct peer-reviewed journal publishable research directly tied to research questions in one or more of the Loy Institute’s current research themes: leader development outcomes, leadership reflection, leadership performance assessments, or organizational inclusivity.
  • Have not an earned doctorate in an academic field related to the work and mission of the Loy Institute
  • Have the ability to file for IRB review at their home institution/organization within the proposal application window
  • Be willing to collaborate with CGA faculty members on Loy Institute-related research project teams
  • Be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or U.S. permanent resident
  • Complete a Predoctoral Fellows application

Benefits for Fellows

Loy Institute Predoctoral Faculty Fellows will have the distinction of being affiliated scholars at one of the nation’s leading and most selective institutions of learning, the United States Coast Guard Academy. Pursuant to IRB approval, Fellows will be granted access to relevant CGA Institutional Research datasets containing years (and for some variables decades) of student demographic, performance, and psychometric data, as well as post-graduation work performance data.

Faculty Predoctoral Fellows may receive financial support to present Loy Institute-related research at academic conferences, as well as at Loy Institute events such as Board of Trustee or Alumni meetings in New London, CT and elsewhere. Fellows are not otherwise paid a salary or stipend, and are not employees of the United States Coast Guard Academy.

Loy Institute Predoctoral Fellow appointments are for a period of one year, which may be renewed for one or more additional years in consultation with Loy Institute staff. Decisions to extend Faculty Fellow appointments will be based on a Fellow’s progress on Institute-based research, the nature and quality of deliverables (conference presentations and journal publications), and other factors as determined by Loy Institute leadership.
