Coast Guard Academy Cyber Council

The U.S. Coast Guard has established mission-essential cyber domain priorities:

The Coast Guard Academy supports these priorities by providing cyber education and training to the future officers of the Coast Guard. Institutional oversight is provided by the Cyber Council. A Board of Advisors supports the Council and the larger Academy governance structure.

The Cyber Systems major, established in 2018, is the focal point of these efforts. Learn more about the Cyber Systems Major at the Coast Guard Academy.

Cyber Council Objectives

  • Achieve and maintain designation as a Department of Homeland Security/National Security Academy Center of Academic Excellence (NSA/DHS CAE-CD)
  • Advocate for appropriate resourcing for cyber education
  • Advise senior leaders on cyber education and training
  • Identify and promote opportunities for collaboration including research, outreach, partnerships, internships and grants.

Partnerships and Resources

Academic and professional development are the core of the cadet experience. Our co-curricular academic and professional offerings provide opportunities to learn from faculty outside the classroom and experts in the field. Hands-on activities allow cadets to apply new knowledge and skills – on campus, in the community, and beyond.

Clubs and Societies

Outreach

Under the oversight of the Cyber Council the Academy conducts outreach within the Corps of Cadets and to secondary school students.

Cyber Range - A mandatory component of second-class (junior) summer for all cadets to establish foundational knowledge of key cyber concepts and principles.

NET21 – A youth leadership experience operating under the U.S. Coast Guard’s Partnership in Education Program. NET21 introduces local youth to the field of cybersecurity and provides mentorship to pursue challenging academic goals.

Accreditation and Governance

ABET accreditation will be sought when the first Cyber Systems majors graduate in May 2022. Learn more at uscga.edu/cyber-systems.

The Cyber Council is chartered by the Superintendent of the Coast Guard Academy to fulfill the requirements of the National Centers of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense (CAE-CDE) Program Criteria for Measurement.

The Council reports to the Provost. Members are selected from each academic department, the Cadet Professional Development and Cadet Training branches; Information Services; Admissions; and stakeholder entities.
