Courtney McKenna

Courtney McKennaI chose the Coast Guard Academy because I wanted to be a part of something bigger then myself. Since I was five years old, I have been very heavily involved in community service—from being a Girl Scout to being a part of community service organizations in high school. Those service opportunities and the feeling that I got after completing a project gave me the desire to continue serving others for the rest of my life.

My current leadership role is as the Alfa Company Commander. As Company Commander, I am the cadet in charge of all the cadets within Alfa Company. Alfa Company is in-charge of the Health and Wellness of the Corps of Cadets which includes: The Physical Fitness Exam, Health and Wellness Week, Commissioning Physicals, and much more. The process of going from learning how to be a follower 4/c year, a mentor 3/c year, and a cadre 2/c year has truly groomed me into the leader I am today. This process properly prepared me to take on this role of Company Commander. Going through each of those years and the variety of adversity gives you more of an idea of what your people are going through and how you can lead each class best. These experiences have shown me how to be an effective and empathetic leader. I hope to grow from my successes and failures and become a successful Ensign in the United States Coast Guard.

“Leaders aren’t born they are made. And they are made just like anything else, through hard work, and that’s the price we’ll have to pay to achieve that goal, or any goal.” - Vince Lombardi
