This Parents’ Weekend, I had the pleasure of hosting both my dad and my grandmother for the weekend. It was a special celebration for my grandmother, in particular, because while she has had sons attend the Naval Academy and West Point, this was her first time visiting the Coast Guard Academy. My dad and grandmother were able to attend two of my classes on Friday: Spanish III and Probability Theory. While they may not have known exactly what we were talking about in either class, they enjoyed the opportunity to take a peek into my day-to-day life. In the afternoon, we watched performances from both the Cadet Jazz Band and the Cadet Glee Club. After that, we went out to dinner. On Saturday, my dad and grandmother toured USCGC Eagle in New London before heading back to the Academy to watch me cheer at the football game. After the game, we went out to dinner again. On Sunday, we finished up an exciting weekend by attending Catholic Mass at the Coast Guard Academy Chapel. While our time spent together was too short, I am very thankful for the chance to see my family.

One of my favorite parts of Parents’ Weekend is becoming more aware of the everyday activities we tend to take for granted. However, once you bring in outsiders (aka family and friends), we are reminded of how lucky we are to attend such an exceptional institution.
