Athletic Opportunities: Running at the Academy

Hey everyone!

I am excited to be able to share my first taste of cadet life with you here at the Coast Guard Academy. While 4/c year comes to a close as the semester is about to end, I have a lot of things I want to share.

I want to touch on the experiences I have had here as an athlete and a cadet. I run both cross country and track and field here for our Division III program. We are a member of the NEWMAC conference, which includes other teams in New England. Being a member of the team here is by far one of my favorite aspects of cadet life. Practice is every day from 1600-1800 and we either have a workout on the track, go on an off-base run, or occasionally we will take some of the cadet vans and drive to the beach and have practice there!

The team here is basically my extended family. I can honestly say that they have my back through thick and thin. I have mentors and role models who help me grow as a cadet and as a person. Being on the team teaches me the impact of hard work and dedication, which I try to carry over into my day-to-day life. I have improved a lot this year in almost all the races I run, from the 1500-meter race to the 5K. Travel for cross country and track have taken me to some awesome places as well. I have raced at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania, the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Bowdoin in Maine, Boston University, and Merchant Marine in Kings Point, New York. We have awesome coaches that are always looking for the best in us, whether that be on the track or in the classroom; they understand the challenges of cadet life and their role in our development as leaders. If someone told me a few years ago that I would have the chance to continue running in college, I would have told them they were lying. Having that opportunity here in an athletic environment that supports me in all facets of life is extremely rewarding. If anyone has any questions about running here at the Academy or just about athletics in general, feel free to reach out and I would be happy to talk some more!

Thanks,

4/c Greg Costello
