A Week to Remember

This virtual AIM experience has widened my view of the Coast Guard Academy especially when it comes to those who are attending and serving. I heard first-hand stories and information from coaches, current students, admissions officers, and many more. I also interacted with other like-minded individuals about our interests and future hopes.

I would have loved to see the Academy with my own eyes, but feel virtual AIM has allowed me the chance to develop further. As a rising senior in the time of COVID-19, I learned to grow the skills I previously gained during the school year such as online education and communication. Those are important factors when conducting successful meetings! Another aspect we touched on was independence and accountability. Since working in-person was not possible, AIMsters were responsible for meeting on time and remaining attentive during the session which personally increased my self-discipline.

In regards to my future college plans, AIM served a crucial role in assessing goals after high school. I am interested in military academies, and after participating I feel more confident about making informed decisions with the information I gained. There are many unique opportunities at the Coast Guard Academy for current students including traveling during the summer to different countries for internships or even sailing with the Coast Guard to Antarctica for research! This virtual course opened my eyes to the wide array of possibilities at the USCGA and offered me a head start on my application. For instance, we completed our interview with the cadre!

Overall, I have created great memories and definitely recommend AIM to anyone who is considering applying to a military academy. The staff and cadre were fantastic when answering questions and being role models. This week is one to remember and I cannot wait to apply to the CGA. Thank you to everyone who made this possible! I really appreciate all you have done for us.
