NOVEMBER 2005

Veterans Weekend was definitely a well-deserved break. I have found that long weekends are a great way to decompress from all the stress of the Academy. We get long weekends for all government holidays. On Thursday, I went straight to bed once liberty was granted. I needed sleep so badly because I had a really rough week academically with both a Physics exam and a Nautical Science exam at the end of the week. After a restful night of actually going to bed before 2200. Two firsties offered us rides to Boston to see a concert with The Academy Is, Rooney, and The All-American Rejects. We took two cars and made the two hour road trip (we definitely helped pay for gas). Before the show, some of us checked out the Ansel Adams photography exhibit at the Boston MFA. For dinner, we ate at a good ol’ New England seafood restaurant. I love fried, fresh cod and fries (hard to come by a fresh Atlantic cod in Texas). The concert was amazing. After a late night drive back to the Academy, I immediately hit the rack. On Saturday, the entire Corps of Cadets attended a morning football game against our rival, Kingspoint. After the game, I met up with some of my friends and we walked downtown (about a mile walk). We picked up a cheese pizza at Empire Pizza as part of my weekly ritual (it’s probably the best pizza I have ever had, seriously). After woofing down a giant pizza, we headed for a local concert in downtown New London. In the backroom of the Dew Art Gallery, local solo artists and bands showcase their songs in a small, intimate venue setting. I’ve met a lot of New London locals and Connecticut College students by going to the shows. After the show, I picked up a homemade album from one of the bands that played. One of the most relaxing parts of the long weekend was that I forgot about the stresses and pressures of the Academy for a couple days.
