Ms. Ellyn Metcalf
Associate Director

Ellyn is the Associate Director of the Admiral James M. Loy Institute for Leadership. She is a 1987 graduate of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and began her career during a pioneering era for women in the military. After serving as deck watch officer on Coast Guard cutters Chase and Hamilton, she had the privilege to serve as the executive assistant to the Commander, Maintenance and Logistics Command Atlantic. Her demonstrated leadership and mentoring skills led to her being assigned to the first formal Leadership Development Staff at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in the 1990s. Following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, she was immersed in the Coast Guard's new mission of Homeland Security. For the next eight years she was a contingency planner for the Captain of the Port in Seattle, Boston and Providence. In 2009, Commander Metcalf retired from the Coast Guard having served for 20 years. Ellyn began her second career as a middle school science teacher in 2006. Her success as a teacher was deeply connected to the leadership foundation she acquired throughout her years in the Coast Guard and at the Coast Guard Academy. Motivated by her strong belief that teachers are leaders, Ellyn founded the TOTAL TEACHER PROJECT, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that connects leadership development experts to ambitious and talented teachers.

Along with her B.S. degree in Government from the Coast Guard Academy, Ellyn holds an M.S. degree in Adult Education and Human Resource Development from Fordham University, and an M.Ed. from the University of Massachusetts, Boston. She holds certifications in elementary education, middle school science, and middle school mathematics.

A native of Weymouth, Massachusetts, Ellyn now lives in Rumford, Rhode Island where she and her husband, John (’87), have been raising their three children.
