Lieutenant Powers is originally from Glens Falls, New York. He reported to the United States Coast Guard Academy in 2004 and graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Management in 2008. Upon graduating, LT Powers’ first tour was as a Deck Watch Officer aboard USCGC Spencer (WMEC 905), a 270’ medium endurance cutter, home-ported in Boston, Massachusetts. From June 2008 through May 2010, LT Powers served as the Weapons Officer, Law Enforcement Officer, Anti-Terrorism/Force Protection Officer and Training Officer, conducting counter-drug and alien migrant interdiction operations in the Caribbean and fisheries law enforcement in the North Atlantic.
Following his tour on Spencer, LT Powers served from May 2010 to May 2011 as the Operations Officer and Weapons Officer on board USCGC Baranof (WPB 1318), a 110’ patrol boat forward deployed to the Arabian Gulf to conduct maritime security operations in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation New Dawn.
Following his tour on Baranof, LT Powers served from June 2011 to February 2013 as the Assistant Weapons Officer and from February 2013 to June 2013 as the Weapons Officer on board the USCGC Waesche (WMSL 751), a 418’ national security cutter, home-ported in Alameda, California. LT Powers led the Deck, Gunnery, Law Enforcement and Navigation divisions through a 5 ½ month USN C7F deployment to Far East Asia in support of Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) and several counter-drug and alien migrant interdiction operations off the coast of California and in the Eastern Pacific.
LT Powers’ personal awards include the Coast Guard Commendation Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal, Commandant’s Letter of Commendation as well as various other unit awards and team awards. LT Powers married the former Samantha Rose Hurd of Middletown, Connecticut in November 2010 and has one daughter, Sofia Rose, born in May 2012. The family has two beloved dogs Jack and Lacy, both rescued from shelters in January 2009 and June 2011 respectively.
