LCDR Bender graduated with honors from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (USCGA) in 2006. After graduation, she stayed at the USCGA for the summer and helped with the coastal sail program before reporting to Navy Flight School in Pensacola, Florida. She earned her ‘wings of gold’ in February 2008. Following HU-25 Falcon training in Mobile, Alabama, LCDR Bender reported to Air Station Corpus Christi as a co-pilot and flew an unprecedented five deployments during her first year. She quickly earned Aircraft Commander status and led multiple counter-drug missions throughout the Caribbean and along the Texas coast. In addition, she helped in surveillance missions after the Haitian earthquake and the Deepwater Horizon disaster in 2010. During this time, LCDR Bender was selected to the All Armed Forces Beach and Indoor volleyball teams (2010-2012) and traveled to Rio de Janeiro and Amsterdam to compete against other nations. In 2012, LCDR Bender transferred back to Pensacola, Florida as a joint flight instructor, teaching Air Force, Marine, Navy, and Coast Guard officers basic flight in the T-6A Texan II. With more than 2,800 flight hours including countless aerobatics, formation, and instrument flights, LCDR Bender is thrilled to be back at the Coast Guard Academy in a rotating military faculty billet.
