LT MacDonnell, a proud native of Newport, Rhode Island, earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Government from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and was commissioned as an ensign in 2006. Upon graduation, LT MacDonnell was stationed as a Deck Watch Officer aboard USCGC Cypress (WLB-210), then home-ported in Mobile, Alabama. Cypress serviced aids to navigation and performed search and rescue, law enforcement, and homeland security throughout the Gulf of Mexico and Straits of Florida. LT MacDonnell’s subsequent tour was as pre-commissioning First Lieutenant and Assistant Weapons Officer aboard USCGC Waesche (WMSL-751), home-ported in Alameda, California. 

Following his tour aboard Waesche, LT MacDonnell served as Executive Officer in USCGC Alder (WLB-216), home-ported in Duluth, Minnesota where he earned a Permanent Cutterman designation in 2012. Alder and her crew performed aids to navigation, domestic ice breaking, search and rescue and homeland security missions in Lake Superior, the St. Mary’s River and Lake Michigan. LT MacDonnell was responsible for the execution of Alder’s operations, and the good order and discipline, safety and well-being of her 50-person crew. LT MacDonnell earned a Master of Arts Degree from Yale University in 2015, where he studied United States History. He and his wife, Christine, live in Old Saybrook, Connecticut with their two children.
