CDR Joseph Staier graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in 1992 with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering. Upon graduation, he served on board two Coast Guard Cutters, USCGCs Eagle and Tahoma. After leaving the fleet and receiving Master of Science degree from the Naval Postgraduate School, his first big engineering project was in charge of software development at the Command and Control Engineering Center for Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) project.  

Following a two-year stint as the Aide de Camp for the Vice Commandant, CDR Staier went to the US Coast Guard Academy as an Assistant Professor of Computer and Electrical Engineering and the Assistant Dean. While there, he helped coach the Pistol team and the Men’s Volleyball club.  

In 2006, CDR Staier immersed himself in the world of data driven decisions as the Program Manager for the Coast Guard’s Business Intelligence system, CGBI. In 2010, he was assigned to the CG’s Telecommunications Information Systems Command to be the Enterprise Network Infrastructure Product Line Manager where he was responsible for all of the CG’s Wide Area Networks, Satellite Communications, Microwaves and long distance telephony.  

In the summer of 2012, he returned to the Coast Guard Academy as the Chief of Electrical Engineering. Hailing from the mountains of North Carolina, he currently lives in Massachusetts with his wife, and his two daughters.
