Hello, everyone! My name is Julia Gavin and I am from Stonington, Connecticut—just a mere hop away from the Academy. I have just started my four years here so I am part of the Class of 2020, also known as a 4/c cadet. My intended major, if all goes well, is Mechanical Engineering. Along with this I am part of the swim team, as I have been swimming since before I could walk. Additionally, I love virtually any activity that requires motion such as yoga, hiking, or surfing. My other passion is cooking; I love to be in the kitchen whether it be just baking cookies or making a meal for my family.
Prior to this year, I was a part of the Coast Guard Academy Scholars program. I came here for three weeks for a more intense, but far shorter, Swab Summer. After this, which I consider one of my most difficult yet rewarding experiences, I went to Marion, Alabama to attend Marion Military Institute. The experiences, memories, and friendships I made at MMI are some of the things that I am most thankful for. While attending prep school was not on the intended path, I wouldn’t have it any other way. The opportunities and skills that CGAS provided me helped me through Swab Summer and thus far through the academic year.
I would love to hear your story or answer any questions. Feel free to shoot me an email at any time and I will try to respond as quickly as possible! Julia.L.Gavin@uscga.edu
