LCDR Dan Cost graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in 1999 with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. Upon graduation, LCDR Cost served as Deck Watch Officer and First Lieutenant on the USCGC Tampa (WMEC 902) out of Portsmouth, Virginia. In 2001, LCDR Cost served as the Executive Officer on the USCGC Sitkinak (WPB 1329) out of Key West, Florida.

In 2003, LCDR Cost was selected for post graduate study and attended the University of Michigan where he earned Masters of Science in Engineering degrees in both Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.

Following graduate school in 2005, LCDR Cost was assigned to the Hull Division at the Coast Guard Marine Safety Center (MSC) in Washington, D.C. As a MSC staff engineer, he reviewed and approved vessel design plans for both large and small U.S. commercial passenger vessels and foreign cruise ships. Additionally, he served on the MSC’s Salvage Engineering Response Team (SERT), a group of engineers that provide vessel salvage engineering support to Coast Guard field units.

In 2009, LCDR Cost transferred to Sector New Orleans’ Prevention Department. As the Chief of Domestic Vessel Inspections, he supervised one of the largest and most diverse inspection offices in the country, conducting 2,500+ vessel inspections per year in an AOR that included Mexico, Central and South America.

LCDR Cost reported to the Coast Guard Academy in June 2012.
