Tall Ship Eagle
3/c Justin Sikora

Training in the operations department on the first leg of the 2nd phase of our voyage has been a really good experience. We learned the proper way to stand watch on the helm and as the lookout, and we actually got to steer the ship. In addition, we did a lot of climbing up in the rigging, since we were in charge of furling the sails while we were on watch. Going aloft is exhilarating. It’s a great place to take pictures.

We also learned about celestial navigation on the open ocean and were able to determine the ship’s position using the sun and stars. The fact that we are in a race makes sailing even more exciting and motivates us all to practice our seamanship and sailing skills.
