Institute for Leadership
Tyler Leadership Chair
The initial step in the development of the Institute for Leadership has been made possible through a generous gift from Dr. and Mrs. James S. Tyler, who endowed the James S. Tyler Distinguished Chair in Leadership in November 2004. Admiral James Loy, USCG (Ret.) became the Institute's first Tyler Leadership Chair in April 2005.
The duties of the Tyler Leadership Chair will include:
- Delivery of an annual Tyler Chair Leadership Address
- Guest lectures in Leadership Seminars for Regimental Staff
- Periodically co-teaching the Executive Politics and Policymaking Seminar
- Guest lectures in Academy classes (i.e., National Security Policy, U.S. Maritime History and Policy, Congress and the Presidency, International Law, Organizational Behavior and Leadership and Organizational Development)
- The planning and hosting of semiannual visits by cadets to Washington, D.C.
- Meeting with Academy summer interns in Washington, D.C.
- Meeting with Academy faculty and staff
With establishment of the James S. Tyler Distinguished Chair in Leadership and the appointment of inaugural Chair holder Admiral James Loy, leadership development at the Academy has taken on an enhanced dimension.
