Ralston, NB ‐ Class of 2015
Major: Marine and Environmental Sciences

I’m James White; a proud member of the class of 2015 who originated from an unlikely place: Ralston, Nebraska. Although I’ve never lived near the ocean, and I’d only seen it in person twice before coming to the Academy, I’ve always had a fascination for the life that inhabits the world’s largest biome. I attribute this fact to the wonderful aquarium at my hometown’s zoo. Besides biology, I’m a big fan of music. I’ve played the trumpet since 6th grade and continue to play it here at the Academy in the Windjammers Drum and Bugle Corp as well as the Regimental Band.

As you might have imagined, it took some work discovering the Coast Guard Academy. I knew I wanted my work to involve the ocean. Being raised to be thankful for what I had, and realizing that if it wasn’t for my country, I may not have what I have, I wanted to go into a career of civil service, such as law enforcement or the military. I originally started with an Army ROTC recruiter who kindly pointed me toward the Navy. The Navy recruiter informed me that the branch was centered more on engineering and less on biology. She then suggested the Coast Guard. Well, there wasn’t a Coast Guard ROTC program, but I found something even better: the Academy, and the rest is history.

Now that I’m here, I’ve been thinking about what I want to do when I’m done. I’m not quite sure what I exactly plan to do, but I hope to be a boarding officer for some time, possibly a CO, and maybe earn myself some stars and some golden shoulder boards. While I’m here, I want to make sure I get the most out of my experience. Although I’ve had some difficulties with academics last year, and the PFE, I refuse to let that slow me down. If I’ve learned one thing here it’s that there is always a positive to everything, even if it takes some searching.
