More Than Just a College

(Choosing the Coast Guard Academy, Class of 2013) Permanent link   All Posts
Brandi Engle I never even thought about applying to the Academy until November of my senior year. I had already sent applications to the University of Texas at Austin, West Virginia University, the University of Maryland, Baylor University, and the University of Colorado at Boulder and I was fortunate enough to be accepted to all of them, but I wanted a place that was more than just a college. I had always enjoyed being on my family’s boat and I saw what the Coast Guard had done in Hurricane Ike when it hit Galveston, so I decided to apply to one more college just to see what happened. The next few months were filled with lots of paperwork (applying is not the easiest process in the world), but the worst part was the wait to see whether I was accepted. I eventually received my acceptance package in April and from then on I knew I would be at the Academy on R-Day. The Academy gives you more than an average college experience and everything you do here, whether it is academics, sports, or clubs, in some way is training you for your future career as an officer.
