ACADEMICS
Engineering
The Department of Engineering provides a nationally recognized, high-quality engineering education that is competitive with the top collegiate engineering programs across the country.

The four engineering majors – Civil, Electrical, Mechanical and Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering – are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET.

Graduates with engineering majors have an outstanding record of accomplishment in graduate school, with approximately half of all engineering graduates selected to attend graduate programs at renowned universities. With tuition funding from the Coast Guard, many officers can enjoy the unusual privilege of dedicating themselves fully to their advanced studies and, for the time of their graduate study, embrace learning as their only duty.

Other officers take advantage of GI Bill assistance to attend graduate programs in off-duty hours. Still others, who leave active duty following completion of their five-year obligation, often go on to respected graduate programs nationwide. All told, more than 80% of engineering graduates of the Academy earn graduate degrees.

The mission of the Department of Engineering is:
  1. To provide an excellent undergraduate engineering education, strong in fundamentals and supportive of the mission of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.
  2. To maintain a quality curriculum, closely reflecting current technologies, and an environment that fosters continuous development of students, faculty and staff.
  3. To contribute as a unique intellectual resource to the Coast Guard and the Department of Homeland Security by involving cadets and faculty in real-time projects when able.
  4. To satisfy the Program Educational Objectives for each respective program.
