I graduated on May 21, 2008 from the U. S. Coast Guard Academy (CGA) with a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering.  The Honors program was one of the reasons I decided not to drop out of the CGA.  The program allowed me to focus my intellectual energies into challenging debates concerning public policy, social theory, and world betterment.  I was rewarded for my pursuit of community involvement and academic rigor.  

I received the Harry S Truman Scholarship in 2007 and was the first cadet from the CGA to receive this honor.  Through the scholarship, I have gained access to leaders in public policy across the nation, introduced scholarly information to up-and-coming CGA cadets, participated in leadership development exercises, mock policy proposals and congressional affairs work, interned for a summer in D.C. with an education-based community action research group, and made friends who have a firm interest in improving the U.S.  Although I have received $30,000 in deferrable monies to go toward post-graduate study, nothing compares to the conversations that I have had with powerfully innovative citizens across the country.
