Dr. Sharon Zelmanowitz
Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering
Dr. Sharon Zelmanowitz’s research and teaching interests encompass shipboard wastewater treatment, membrane bioreactors, biological wastewater treatment, wastewater microbiology, and constructed wetlands. Her research agenda also includes engineering education and engineering outcomes assessment in civil engineering and information literacy for engineering majors. At the Academy, Dr. Zelmanowitz frequently supervises senior engineering design projects related to her research.
Prior to joining the faculty of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, Dr. Zelmanowitz worked as an Environmental Engineer at Alliance Technologies in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Dr. Zelmanowitz is a registered Professional Engineer, and a recipient of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Alumni Association Distinguished Faculty Award.
Dr. Zelmanowitz received her B.S. in Agricultural Engineering from Cornell University; her M.S. in Biological and Agricultural Engineering from North Carolina State University, and her Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
