The Center for Maritime Policy & Strategy was founded in 2012. The Center consolidated ongoing faculty, staff, and cadet research, scholarship, and outreach on maritime policy and strategy at the Coast Guard Academy, creating an interdisciplinary scholarly community. Upon its founding, CMPS replaced the Center for Maritime and Strategy Studies, which previously sponsored the Distinguished Visiting Professor and Resident Fellow in Maritime Studies. The Distinguished Visiting Professor and Resident Fellow during Academic Year 2011-2012 was Professor Craig Allen, the Judson Falknor Professor of Law at the University of Washington. The founding director of the previous Center for Maritime and Strategy Studies was CAPT Robert C. Ayer, USCG (Retired).
